The Northeast Georgia History Center is pleased to announce the return of its Summer Chautauqua series. For our 2021 season we will be honoring our healthcare heroes past and present.

On June 8th at 7:00 PM, you will meet Georgia’s own Dr. Crawford Long, portrayed by Andy Garrison, who was the first to use inhaled sulfuric ether as an anesthetic in 1845 changing the medical practice of surgery forever.
On July 13th at 7:00 PM, you will meet Dr. Mary Walker, portrayed by Sue McCranie, who was the first woman surgeon in the U.S. and was also the first woman surgeon in the U.S. Army during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
On August 10th at 7:00 PM, you will meet Dr. E.E. Butler, portrayed by Mustapha Slack, who was a physician in Gainesville, Georgia during the 1930s-1950s serving the African-American community both as a doctor and community leader. This performance will be a film premiere and conclude with a live Q&A between historian Glen Kyle and the audience.
